In December 2013 we were proud to award Suzanne Johnson, a Reablement Support Assistant of the South East Reablement Team at Tyrells, Benfleet, with Employee of the month. After only a month’s service with Essex Cares, Suzanne encountered a medical emergency that required her to go beyond her normal duties and ultimately save a life.

When Suzanne arrived at the customer’s house back in December, it was immediately clear that this wouldn’t be a regular reablement visit. “I thought the customer looked unwell from the beginning and suggested to her husband to ring 999. Via speaker phone they instructed me to check her airwaves which I then followed with chest compressions.”

Despite the alarming start to the visit, Suzanne remained calm and delivered the service that was needed at the time. “The emergency services talked me through what I needed to do and kept me calm until the paramedics arrived. When they came and took over, I waited with her husband until she was taken away in the ambulance.”


Suzanne explained: “I was just focused on helping this lady and keeping her husband as calm as was possible.”

Our Reablement service offers a short-term six week period of support which encourages customers to regain and retain everyday skills which allow for greater independence. She continued: “the training given is a very important part of being able to cope in this kind of situation.” However having exceptional staff like Suzanne on-hand means that Essex Cares can offer a service above and beyond our basic line of care.

We asked Susanne how it felt to win December’s award, “I was surprised to be nominated but was really pleased. It’s nice to be recognised and it’s great for Liz Chidgey (Managing Director, Essex Cares) to personally come out and say thank you. It was a lovely surprise, the cake was delicious and I’m yet to go shopping!”
