What time does the day at the centre start and end?

9am - 4pm but each centre may differ slightly.

What age group do you support at the Older Adult Centres?

There is no specific age requirement as we can accommodate younger adults that for example, may have early onset Dementia if the service is right for them.

Where are the centres?

There are over 28 centres across Essex.

Who owns the ECL Wellbeing Centres?

ECL was established by Essex County Council (ECC) in 2009 as the UK’s first Local Authority Trading Company. Our company status means that although we are a private limited company, we are wholly owned by Essex County Council

Do different centres cater for different levels of need?

  • Most of our services can scale support to meet the needs of individual customers.
  • We can fully support individuals with more complex needs and those in the later stages of dementia.
  • Our sites are fully accessible and have facilities to meet the needs of our diverse customer base. Many of our centres offer larger accessible bathrooms with tracking hoist systems, specialist bathing facilities and a Sensory Room.
  • Many of our highly skilled staff are specialists in supporting adults with early and late stages of dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Can you deal with medical conditions like dementia or incontinence?

Yes, staff are sensitive to the needs of older adults and receive on-going training in multiple disciplines including First Aid, Medication Administration, Epilepsy, Dementia Awareness, Safeguarding, Catheter Care and many more.

What is the carer/customer ratio?

The ratio is dependent on the needs of the individual, and we assess people to make sure we have enough staff. Sometimes people work in groups with one member of staff, for some there may be times when two staff work with the person.

What support would I get from the staff?

Our support is person centred and tailored to the individual. We will work with you and your family to develop a personalised support plan. Our team will support you step by step to follow that plan and reach your goals and desired outcomes.

I am quite vulnerable to the behaviour of others; will I be safe?

Yes, absolutely your safety is our priority, we will always ensure that staffing levels and training are more than sufficient to keep you safe.

Will I get to go out and where?

  • Yes, there will be plenty of opportunities for activities within the community.
  • Our staff facilitate customer-led forums to choose the activities that people want to do, and places that people would like to visit.
  • Garden centres, bowling, seaside, lunch out, shopping, banking, cinema are just some of the activities available.

What type of activities will I be able to do at an ECL Wellbeing Centre?

  • The list is endless, we aim to make sure each day is packed with fun and stimulating activities. Activities include arts and crafts, music, reminiscence sessions, chair fit and pet therapy.
  • Our activities are designed to encourage customers to gain/maintain independence skills and try new things. For example, you can learn or re-learn daily living skills such as cooking, laundry and personal care.
  • Customers will be encouraged to make their own choices as to which activities they engage in.

How much does it cost to attend an ECL day centre?

  • The cost is dependent on the level of support required. You will be assessed, and a tailored quote will be created for you.
  • Typically the cost of a full day in one of our centres starts around £58.
  • You do not have to attend our centres a minimum number of days per week and you can even book individual sessions.

Do the ECL Wellbeing Centres also provide respite care?

Yes, we can offer respite visits to enable family and carers to take a well-earned break.

Will I get lunch at an ECL centre?

You will be given the opportunity to purchase lunch (either catered on-site, delivered or purchased when out and about).

Would I get help with the cost of attending?

Many people do, you will need to speak to adult social care services to get advice on this.

Would I get transport to an ECL centre and would I have to pay for it?

  • Some of our customers have transport arranged by adult social care services. This is decided during the assessment that a social worker carries out with you.
  • Some of our customers come by privately funded taxis or are dropped off by family members/friends/carers.
  • Some of our services have their own private transport which can pick you up from home at a small additional cost.

How do I apply to ECL and what would happen next?

  • You can contact us direct by phone to our contact centre who will help identify the closest service, call in to a centre near you or via social services.
  • Once we receive your referral, we will contact you to assess your individual needs and discuss your goals with you.
  • You are welcome to arrange a taster day with us to familiarise yourself with our service.
