Learning Disability Service (Wellbeing) FAQs

What time does the day at the hub start and end?

  • 9am - 4pm but each hub may differ slightly.

What age group do you support?

  • Services for adults with Learning Disabilities (LD) - 18 plus.
  • Services for Older Adults – most customers are 70 plus but this not a minimum age requirement we can accommodate younger adults that for example, may have early onset Dementia.

Where are the centres?

Do different centres cater for different levels of need?

  • Most of our services can scale support to meet the needs of individual customers.
  • Our sites are fully accessible and have facilities to meet the needs of our diverse customer base. Many of our centres offer larger accessible bathrooms with tracking hoist systems, specialist bathing facilities and a Sensory Room.

What is the carer/customer ratio?

  • The ratio is dependent on the needs of the individual, and we assess people to make sure we have enough staff. Sometimes people work in groups with one member of staff, for some there may be times when two staff work with the person.

What support would I get from the staff?

  • Our support is person centred and tailored to the individual. Our Trusted Assessors will help you to develop your own plan and our care team will support you step by step throughout the journey to follow that plan and reach your goals and desired outcomes.

I have complex needs and am quite vulnerable to the behaviour of others, will I be safe?

  • Yes, absolutely your safety is our priority, we will always ensure that staffing levels and training are more than sufficient to keep you safe.

Will I get to go out and where?

  • Yes, there will be plenty of opportunities for activities within the community.
  • Our staff facilitate customer-led forums to choose the activities that people want to do, and places that people would like to visit.
  • Garden centres, bowling, seaside, lunch out, shopping, banking, cinema are just some of the activities available.

What type of activities will I be able to do at an ECL Wellbeing Hub?

  • The list is endless, we aim to make sure each day is packed with fun and stimulating activities. Activities can range from arts and crafts to dance and drama!
  • Our activities are designed to encourage customers to gain/maintain independence skills and try new things.
  • Customers will be encouraged to make their own choices as to which activities they engage in.

How much does it cost to attend an ECL hub?

  • The cost is dependent on the level of support required. A tailored quote will be created for you.
  • A Trusted Assessor will meet each customer to assess needs.

Will I get lunch at an ECL hub?

  • You will be given the opportunity to purchase lunch (either catered on-site, delivered or purchased when out and about).

Would I get help with the cost of attending?

  • Many people do, you will need to speak to your social worker to get advice on this.

Would I get transport to an ECL hub and would I have to pay for it?

  • Some of our customers have transport arranged by their social worker. This is decided during the assessment carried out with the social worker.
  • Some of our customers come by privately funded taxis or are dropped off by family members/friends/carers.
  • Some of our services have their own private transport which can pick you up from home at a small additional cost.

How do I apply to ECL and what would happen next?

  • You can apply to ECL either through a self-referral by contacting us direct or via social services.
  • Once we received your referral, one of our trusted assessors will visit you to assess your individual needs and discuss your goals with you.
  • You are invited to a taster day with us to familiarise yourself with our service.

Could I just come for a look round to see if I think it’s for me?

Learning Disability (Work Based Training) FAQs

Can I work towards any recognised qualifications?

Yes, some of our hubs offer ASDAN accreditation in areas such as hospitality and catering, health and hygiene, travel training and independent living skills. These are multi-level courses, the focus is on completing challenges and skills development according to individual ability, rather than attainment at a specific level.

I don’t know what I need to do to get a job, can you help?

  • We can do an employment assessment with you to see how we can best support you to prepare for work. You might want to take a course with us, write your cv or prepare for interviews.
  • Some of our hubs offer several types of work-based training and you will be very welcome to try them all.
  • We can also help you find work experience in your local area.
  • We can help you learn a route to travel to work.
  • We can work with you to settle into a new job.

What Work Based Training is on offer?

Some our LD hubs offer training in the following areas:

  • Carpentry
  • Catering and hospitality
  • Creative Design (arts and crafts)
  • Printing and reprographics
  • Gardening/horticulture
  • Drama
  • Packing (hand packing, labelling, sleeve wrapping, booklet collation, heat sealing, gift wraps, shrink wrapping, cards, boxes, light assembly of electrical components, swatches, collating, glueing and taping)

I don’t know what training I would like to do; can I try more than one?

  • Some of our hubs offer several types of Work Based Training and you will be very welcome to try them all. We will work with customers and their families to review which services suit the individual.

Is there a minimum criteria to participate in Work Based Training?

  • We can involve customers with a wide variety of needs in our Work Based Training.
  • If you want to take it slowly you can start within our wellbeing hub and move to work based training when feeling more confident.
  • Your goal does not have to be paid employment, it could be supported employment, volunteering or just achieving a greater sense of purpose.

If I go on to secure employment do I have to leave ECL?

  • No, employment doesn’t mean you have to leave the service, it might just reduce how much support you need.
