The service which gets older hospital patients up and moving around as soon as possible after their treatment is a finalist in the ‘Best in Healthcare Outcomes’ category.

Debbie Edgell, ECL Reablement North Essex Regional Business Manager said: “We’re thrilled to have been selected as finalists in this category. We’re so proud of what we have achieved at Colchester hospital and it’s great to receive national recognition for the programme’s success at such prestigious industry awards. Just being a finalist is a huge achievement and while we are crossing our fingers for a win on the night, if it doesn’t happen everyone should be incredibly proud to have gotten this far. Achieving a finalist place is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our North Essex Ward-led team who have made the programme the success that it is today.”

The Ward-led Enablement programme is designed help ward staff to support patients to be as independent as possible during their hospital stay. Encouraging them to be mobile, up and out of bed, washing and dressing themselves to make the transition home easier.

Starting the reablement process in the hospital setting can help improve patient recovery times and maximise independence. This in turn, reduces the likelihood of extended stays and minimises the need for ongoing at home care following discharge.

The programme launched at Colchester hospital in October 2022, following a successful six-month pilot. In its first three months it reduced the average length of hospital stay per patient by three days, which equates to a 42% improvement.

This success attracted interest from both the Mid and South Essex NHS Trust and The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT), and the service is now being piloted in Basildon, Broomfield, and Southend hospitals as well as in the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow and Queen’s Hospital in Romford.

The LaingBuisson Awards celebrate success in the health and social care industry.

This year’s category winners will be announced at a ceremony on 16th of November.
