Finding connection and confidence at Loughton Older People’s Day Centre

Sylvia was unsure about attending Loughton Older People’s Day Centre, but what began as a tentative taster session soon became a vital part of her weekly routine, helping her stay active, social and confident while living with Alzheimer’s. Now attending four days a week, Sylvia has found connection, stimulation and a warm sense of belonging that has made a real difference to both her life and her family’s peace of mind.

When Sylvia first heard about ECL’s Loughton Older People’s Day Centre, she wasn’t convinced it would be right for her. Although living with Alzheimer’s, she cherished her independence and didn’t like the idea of going to a day centre. But everything changed in July 2025 when, encouraged by a friend, her daughter Emma arranged a taster session.

Before attending, Sylvia and Emma visited the ECL website to learn more, then spoke with Lead Manager, Oliver Mann to book a free introductory visit.

That first visit changed everything. What began as a hesitant step soon became part of Sylvia’s weekly routine. She started attending once a week, which quickly grew to twice weekly and then to four days. Now the centre is an important part of her weekly routine.

After my taster day, I was pleasantly surprised, I enjoyed it much more than I expected...I would definitely recommend coming here.

A social, supportive environment

Sylvia and her husband moved from the East End of London to Chigwell in 1966 to  raise her two children. She has always been sociable and active. She loves spending time with friends, enjoys quiz shows, music, and being outdoors.

Although Sylvia has had many hobbies over the years, she no longer does them at home. The centre gives her a chance to explore different activities again, without pressure, and surrounded by friendly faces. From crafts to games to group activities, there’s always something to look forward to. She particularly enjoys the fact there’s a hot, home‑cooked lunch served every day.

Speaking about why she likes attending ECL Loughton Sylvia said: “I like the day centre because I meet people and get to chat. It’s more interesting for me to come here rather than being bored just sitting at home. Here I get to talk to people and take part in activities I wouldn’t ordinarily do. It keeps my brain active.”

Sylvia has always been active and independent, and the day centre helps her continue living life on her own terms.

For her daughter Emma, knowing her mum is safe and supported has made an enormous difference. She said: “It’s nice knowing Mum is well looked after at the centre. She was anxious that first day, but she loved it straight away. Now she tells others how much she enjoys it. Knowing she’s safe, cared for and having fun is a really big thing for me.”

Coming to the centre is a big part of my life now, it’s got a nice family feel. Everyone’s pleased to see you when you come in each morning, which is lovely.

Encouraging others to give it a try

For anyone feeling unsure about taking that first step, Sylvia has a simple message:

“I encourage you to try it, you won’t know if you like it or not until you do. I was pleasantly surprised.”

The difference the centre has made for Sylvia is clear. A place she wasn’t sure she even wanted to visit has become one where she feels welcomed, stimulated and connected. She states, “I would definitely recommend coming here.”

It’s nice knowing Mum is well looked after at the centre. She was anxious that first day, but she loved it straight away. Knowing she’s safe, cared for and having fun is really important to me.
