Information for employers

Hosting a supported intern with ECL is a practical way to develop future talent, strengthen inclusive employment practices and make a positive impact locally - with expert job‑matching and ongoing support throughout.

Why host a Supported Intern?

ECL works closely with employers across Essex to create positive, well‑matched and supported placements that benefit both the intern and the workplace.

Employers who offer supported internship placements benefit from:

  • Access to motivated young people who are keen to learn and contribute.
  • A cost‑effective way to develop future employees.
  • Ongoing job‑matching and support from ECL’s supported employment specialists.
  • Support to build a more inclusive and diverse workforce.
  • The opportunity to make a positive social impact locally.

Many employers find supported internships are a successful pathway into recruiting committed and loyal employees.

Their communication skills have improved so much that they are communicating directly with their line managers and colleagues which just shows how ready for employment they are.

What Is Expected from Employers?

Employers are asked to:

  • Provide a meaningful role and real work experience.
  • Offer a safe, welcoming and inclusive working environment.
  • Work in partnership with ECL and the college.
  • Provide feedback to support the intern’s development.

Interns are typically in the workplace 3–4 days per week, with placements lasting approx. 9 months.

While supported internships are unpaid, they are designed with a clear focus on progression into sustained paid employment, where possible.
