ECL's successful first year of Barking and Dagenham reablement service

ECL’s new reablement service in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham has reached the milestone of delivering home care to 519 people in the first year of its contract.

ECL was awarded a six-year contract in October 2024 to provide short-term care at home to people following a spell of ill health, surgery or an accident, as part of Barking and Dagenham council’s vision to provide access to therapy-led reablement to local residents.

One year in, the service has helped 519 people in the borough back to independence - enabling them to live independently outside of the care system. More than half of these, 54%, finished with no further ongoing care needs, which is the ideal outcome in reablement care.

People like Patricia, aged 86 who needed reablement care following a hospital stay after falling down the stairs at home.

Prior to her fall, Patricia had no mobility issues and was fully independent. Her goal upon leaving hospital was to return to being able to live at home independently. Most notably, to be able to continue to go up and down the stairs without assistance.

The carers were very nice; I can’t fault them at all. At the end of the 6 weeks I was confident moving about at home and going upstairs.

Our team of skilled carers and clinical therapists worked with Patricia to help her regain her mobility and her independence. She ended the care package not needing any further care.

Speaking about her care Patricia said: “The carers were very nice; I can’t fault them at all. They gave me exercises to do and showed me how to help my leg as I move about. I had three visits a day and as I got better I didn’t need them to come as much so they reduced it down. By the time they finished I was confident moving about at home and going upstairs. I would recommend them; they were very good.”

We were thrilled to win the contract to provide reablement services to the residents of Barking and Dagenham last year. We share the council’s vision to provide access to therapy-led home care.

Peter Fairley, ECL Managing Director said: “We were thrilled to win the six-year contract to provide reablement services to the residents of Barking and Dagenham last year. We share the council’s vision to provide access to therapy-led reablement to local residents. To date we have helped more than 500 people to regain independence in their own homes and have ambitions to support considerably more people to live independently in year two.”

The CQC registered service operates seven days a week from 7am to 10pm. Working closely with local hospitals to get people home safely and provide therapy and reablement support to help them to regain their independence sooner.
