ECL’s Sensory Service celebrates 100th member of the Sensory Action Alliance
ECL’s Sensory Service is proud to announce a major milestone in its mission to create a more inclusive Essex. Over 100 businesses and organisations have now joined the Sensory Action Alliance, the UK’s first initiative of its kind dedicated to improving accessibility for individuals with sight and/or hearing loss.
Launched in 2019 by ECL’s Sensory Service team, the Sensory Action Alliance brings together organisations from different sectors who have pledged to make two simple but impactful changes to enhance the lives of people with sensory impairments. These changes are designed to be practical, sustainable, and transformative to help build a more sensory-friendly community.

"It's an amazing achievement for the ECL Sensory Action Alliance to have reached over 100 members.
Although rooted in Essex, our impact is national, and we couldn’t be prouder of our members. Each one is making a meaningful difference by actively fulfilling their pledges and championing sensory inclusion across communities."
-Jane Sillitoe-Crouch, Sensory Area Business Manager, ECL
Why do we need Sensory Action Alliance?
In Essex over 350,000 people are living with sensory loss. ECL is working towards making the community we live in more accessible and inclusive. Barriers for people with sensory loss can stem from various factors, including limited access to transportation, technology, building facilities, and everyday tasks which often cause people to stop going out, lose confidence and independence and become excluded from their community.
Benefits of Membership
Members of the Sensory Action Alliance gain access to a range of benefits, including:
- Publicly demonstrating your integrity and commitment to improving access for all.
- Opening your business up to thousands of potential new customers.
- Equalities Act 2010 and NHS Accessible Information Standard compliance.
- Reduce missed appointments and improve your CQC rating.
- Networking and training opportunities with other alliance members.
- Ongoing support from the ECL Sensory team for information, guidance and advice.
I would really encourage other organisations to join Sensory Action Alliance and become Sensory Champions. By making small changes, you will open the door to a wider part of our Essex community.
Paul Pemberton, Inclusive Prevention and Partnerships Manager, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service
